Wayne Green

Vice President & Chief of Staff

Office of the Chief of Staff
The vice president and chief of staff is responsible for integrating staff and functional elements at the university level, insuring that internal day-to-day operations are highly effective and efficient. This position is also responsible for the oversight of public safety, the strategic planning process and serving as a resource for the senior leadership team.

Retired U.S. Army Col. Wayne Green has been selected to serve in this role. Green culminated his 30-year career in the Army as chief of staff of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and led the enterprise and business functions of the academy, integrating and building consensus across five business units, 16 functional direct reports and seven partnerships. He also stewarded resources of more than $140 million in support of a client base of more than 10,000 students, employees and family members and more than 50,000 graduates.

Throughout his career, Green has led progressively larger and more complex formations of soldiers and Army civilians. Prior to his role at West Point, Green was the city manager of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and was responsible for a 5,600-acre Army installation with over two million square feet of historic and traditional campus structures, a $100 million operating budget and 400 civilian employees in support of the Army’s Command and General Staff College and two Department of Defense prisons. He has also held key positions in operations, training, legislative affairs on Capitol Hill, logistics management, and facilities management. Green began as a tank platoon leader and support platoon leader in Germany that included a combat tour in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991.

Green earned a master’s degree in strategic planning from the Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies and a master’s degree in general administration from Central Michigan University. He was also the distinguished honor graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School and the U.S. Army Jungle Operations Courses, as well as the recipient of the Draper Leadership Award. Green was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduation from West Point in 1987.

Green was born in DuQuoin, Illinois, and raised on a horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky. He has been married for 20 years to Tara, a West Point graduate and retired Army officer. She holds a master’s degree in adult education and now manages an educational service program in leadership development. They enjoy spending time with their family of two boys and two girls ranging in age from six to 19.
